DTU, Copenhagen: Nina Gierasimczuk: A logical model for Deductive Mastermind.

4/3/2014

4 March 13-14.15 at DTU: A logical model for Deductive Mastermind. Empirical test in a massively used online learning system.

Title: A logical model for Deductive Mastermind. Empirical test in a massively used online learning system.
Speaker: Nina Gierasimczuk, ILLC, Amsterdam.
Time: 4 March 13.00-14.15.
Place: Room 040, building 324, Technical University of Denmark.

Abstract:  I will discuss the psychological relevance of a logical model for deductive reasoning. The talk will focus on a new way to analyze logical reasoning in a deductive version of the Mastermind game implemented within a popular Dutch online educational learning system (Math Garden). The model, based on he analytic tableaux method known from proof theory, allows predictions about the difficulty of Deductive Mastermind tasks (a proxy for working memory load). The empirical hypotheses were tested against a large group of students (over 37 thousand children, 5–12 years of age), which gave empirical difficulty ratings of all 321 game-items. The results show that our logical approach predicts these item ratings well, which supports the psychological relevance of the model. A significant part of this talk will be devoted to the architecture and significance of the Math Garden educational learning system.

The talk is based on joint work: Nina Gierasimczuk, Han van der Maas, and Maartje Raijmakers, An analytic tableaux model for Deductive Mastermind empirically tested with a massively used online learning system, Journal of Logic, Language and Information 2013, pdf.

Synchrony, Couplling and Complementarity in Social Interaction, talk by Andreas Roepstorff

26/9/2013

On Thursday 26 September 2013, Andreas Roepstorff from the Interacting Minds Centre at Aarhus University will give a talk at DTU Compute, Technical University of Denmark – Building 322, room 030 at 14:30. Andreas will talk about some of his research on social interaction, specifically about his insights into a level of social interaction that he believes might come before Theory of Mind. Research in human social interaction, like the research of Andreas, is becoming more and more important in artificial intelligence because of an increasing focus on the importance of creating socially intelligent systems.

Synchrony, Coupling and Complementarity in Social Interaction
Andreas Roepstorff, Interacting Minds Centre, Aarhus University

For a long time, theories of social cognition were mainly concerned with 'the problem of other minds'. However, a recent move to study various forms of joint action has shifted to focus from representationist accounts of other people (i.e. what are the intentions) to more interactionalist accounts (how do people couple, as interactions unfold). In my talk, I will review a set of experiments from our research group to discuss forms of coupling in social interaction at behavioral, physiological and linguistic levels.

All are welcome.
