3 OCTOBER 2011
Communication as interaction: a planning-based perspective
Abstract:
Ordinary human languages are used interactively, but building precise models of this interactive process is difficult. In this talk I will discuss how a tool from Artificial Intelligence can be used for this purpose. The tool is called a planner, and its role is to find plans which take us from a given state into some desired state; in short, just as its name suggests, it finds plans.
In particular, I will discuss two important roles that a classical planner can play when we model communication as interaction, a generative role, and an interpretative role. On the generative side, I will discuss how to use a planner to generate appropriate utterances by selecting them from a corpus. On interpretive side, I will discuss how planners can be used to deal with instructions in a way that takes Gricean implicatures and clarification requests into account.
